Review: The Dry by Jane Harper

“A desperate act in a small town with big secrets.”

It hadn’t rained in Kiewarra for two years. Tensions in the farming community become unbearable when three members of the Hadler family are discovered shot to death. Federal Police investigator Aaron Falk returns to his hometown for the funerals and is unwillingly drawn into the investigation and must confront the community that rejected him twenty years earlier.

The Dry was another recommendation; a book that I (generally) would not pick up myself. In saying that, I think this is one of the best books I have read this year.

The words flow so easily across the pages, and the detail made me feel as if I was right there with the characters. The memories of Falk’s past are interwoven throughout the story so expertly that the transitions are seamless, and add so much context to the characters and interactions.

The stark outlook of rural living is humbling and the effects of the drought on a town such as this one were peppered throughout, as well as the truth that they can often be forgotten by the rest of the country.

This thriller keeps you guessing until the very last moment. I often guess the ending by the middle of a book, but this time I was shocked by the ending.

I heard this book is being made into a movie, it will be interesting to see how they can portray the emotion within this book on the big screen. I will have to check it out once it is released!

All in all, I could not put this book down. Highly recommend!
